HEALTH AND WELLBEING
PROGRAM
Background Information
In 2019, Kuzza children’s foundation was founded in the community of Lugali – butambala district. There were continued cases of child neglect but later we realised it’s a result of Teenage pregnancy (TP) that had become and are still a social concern despite the many interventions taken. Kkuza saw the need for change and have been determined to reduce the number of these issues since the beginning. Since the health and wellbeing of many teenagers and children is affected by TP we were driven to start a program for health and wellbeing for not only the victims of TP but the community at large. We started by addressing the above issue though sensitizations, community engagement and education while keeping all work conducted Christ centred. We aim to continue to change people’s mindset, attitudes and knowledge in the hopes to fight TP in the community.
THE SITUATION
The significant number of people within the population of 19,900 with one medical facility, the community members have really struggled with this and do not take their children for necessary health care such as check-ups and immunisation and pregnant women and elderly people don’t regularly meet their doctors. As a result of this, many people turn to self-medication and wait until the sickness worsens. This is all due to the long distance and the insufficient number of medicines and medical equipment within the facility
Guaranteeing the right to access to health requires appropriate proactive measures to ensure effective equal opportunities for all children to enjoy the rights under the Convention. This requires positive measures aimed at redressing a situation of substantive inequality in access to health.
THE SOLUTION
Due to these challenges raised by the community members, Kkuza children’s foundation have conducted various programs including an annual medical camp, education events, cleaning wells, hygiene and sanitation promotion and Sexual reproductive health services for adolescents etc.
The annual medical camp supports the community through providing education, psychosocial support and counselling, overall health checks, free medications, testing for HIV/AIDS and immunisations for children. The education days provide knowledge to the community about various topics including teenage pregnancy, hygiene and cleanliness, sexual reproductive health, nutrition and common diseases. Cleaning the wells within the community ensures that everyone is getting clean water and stopping the spread of water bourn sickness and disease.
Our Health promotion and disease prevention programs focus on keeping vulnerable children and the community healthy. Health promotion programs aim to engage and empower individuals and communities to choose healthy behaviors, and make changes that reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases and other morbidities.
Kkuza hopes to start a health clinic that provides the highest quality and most accessible care physically, mentally and psychosocially for all children and families. Health and wellbeing are such an important part of a community and as an organisation we want to ensure that everyone is able to seek the adequate care and treatment necessary.
Health Promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health. It moves beyond a focus on individual behavior towards a wide range of social and environmental interventions
